I vividly remember many times when my mom and I would check monthly brochures from our friendly neighborhood Avon representative (AKA my little sister’s nanny). We’d flip through pages of eye-catching apparel and accessories, beauty essentials and all sorts of other random knickknacks, in search of the latest interesting finds. We loved it so much that we bought something almost every month.
I think what got me and my mom truly hooked was the unmistakable passion with which Avon constantly came out with new products. Every page of their brochure, every photograph, always captured the brand’s distinct vision and values, cultivated for over a century and made to last for decades more to come.
I remember stocking up on Avon mascaras and lipsticks back in the day, always getting giddy at whatever new product they were promoting. Fast forward to a few years and here I am, astounded and grateful that my work as a blogger grants me the privilege of receiving product-filled packages from a brand I practically grew up with.
That said, I’m excited to share with you my thoughts on some items I recently got from the Avon True Color line. Anchored on the brand’s mantra of "Beautiful Promises Kept," these products claim to deliver on the promise of good quality makeup: effortless, reliable and without compromise.
I got to try the Skin Goodness Moisturizing BB Cream (SPF20) in Nude, which is a lightweight base that absorbs easily for a very natural look. This stuff evens out my skin nicely and feels like nothing when worn. The Skin Goodness CC Cream (SPF50) in Light is also lovely. It’s slightly thicker and creamier than the BB cream, and provides more coverage. Both creams are great to use on their own or layered under your favorite foundation (they provide nourishing skincare benefits, after all), depending on what you are going for.
Thin and lightweight, the Avon Ideal Oil Control plus Dual Powder Foundation (SPF24) in Neutral is one that I like to use on areas where I get a bit shiny during the day. This is on the stiffer side as far as powder textures go, but I find that to be the case in most mattifying powders anyway.
What also gives a nice amount of coverage, but is incredibly soft to the touch is the Avon Skin Goodness CC Powder (SPF30). The color I have, Light Medium, is a shade too dark for me, but I still like to dust it with a brush on the perimeters of my face for a bit of subtle bronzing. I really like the natural finish it gives.
I knew immediately that I would love the Avon Ideal Luminous Blush in Rose Luster. It’s that pretty shade of peachy-pink that is flattering on most skin tones. It’s pigmented, easy to blend, and lasts a good few hours on me.
I was so excited to try these eye products from Avon. Since I love playing with eyeshadow, I always take little palettes with me for on-the-go makeup application; these sleek compacts fit the bill perfectly. I have the 5G quads (infused with real gold!) in Glow Teal, Urban Skyline, and Romantic Mauve, which all contain very soft, easy to blend eyeshadows. Their pigmentations vary a bit — some shades apply more intensely than others — so I prefer to use an eye primer for maximum impact and longevity.
The only thing missing is a nice, matte shade in each of these Quads (they are all shimmery or metallic, save for #4 in the Urban Skyline Quad which is an impressive, deep matte black). While it is by no means a deal breaker, the addition of a matte shade for each compact would have been the cherry on top.
The two shades I have from the True Color Lipstick line, Hot Pink and Red, are vibrant colors that go on really smoothly on the lips. They have a lush, satin finish, but a quick blot will give you something more semi-matte. I also have two tubes from the Avon 24k Gold line: a baby pink hue called 24k Carnation and a festive red called Ruby in Gold. Both give off a pretty, golden sheen on the lips without being too in-your-face, as they are slightly sheer.
Then there are the matte lipsticks. I’ve got Red Supreme, Hot Plum and Wild Cherry — all gorgeous, statement hues. If you’ve been searching for a creamy, comfortable matte lipstick, look no further. These lippies from Avon are fantastic and I will surely be getting more from this line (the nude shades are calling out my name!).
Perhaps the biggest surprise for me were the Avon Glazewear lip glosses. The texture is lightweight and moisturizing, but it stays put for hours. I have Pink Watermelon and Mauve Movement, both lovely pink tones perfect as lipstick toppers or worn on their own for a fun, youthful look.
I am so pleased with all the makeup I got from Avon that I use them almost daily. I feel like nowadays, we get so caught up in all the hip, new brands and trendy products popping up in the market, but they do sometimes fall short of their grandiose claims and shiny, embellished packaging.
This is why I never underestimate tried-and-tested companies like Avon. They don’t lose sight of what they stand for, and know exactly what they can offer — Beautiful Promises Kept, indeed. It’s a brand I keep coming back to, not only to rekindle old loves but to also discover new favorites.
